  Golf
Charleston is a golfer's haven. Charleston is the home of America's first golf course and private golf club. Established in 1786, The South Carolina Golf Club came into existence and the associated course, Harleston Green, was completed. No longer in existence, the prominence of the Charleston coast in the golf world began with Harleston Green and the 1991 Ryder Cup on Kiawah Island's Ocean Course cemented Charleston's place in golf lore.

Check out this complete list of golf courses in the Charleston area for more information.

  Sports

The North Charleston Lowgators Basketball
Part of The NBA's newly formed farm system, The National Basketball Developmental League, The North Charleston Lowgators came into existence in 2001. The Lowgator's claim to fame so far is that they were part of an ESPN miniseries/documentary that followed the team for several weeks detailing the hardships of minor-league athletes striving to achieve the next level in their profession. The Lowgators provide an affordable night out for an entire family. For more on the Lowgators, including their schedule, visit www.nba.com/nbdl/ncharleston/.

South Carolina Stingrays Hockey
Hockey is alive and well here in the Lowcountry, and the Stingrays are establishing a tradition as a winner. With two Kelly Cup titles as East Coast Hockey League champs since the establishment of the franchise in 1993, the Stingrays provide an exciting way to spend a mild Lowcountry winter evening. It may be colder in the rink than it is outside! For more information, visit www.stingrayshockey.com.

The Charleston Riverdogs Baseball
The Charleston Riverdogs came into existence in the 1994 under the colorful and creative ownership of Michael Veeck. Veeck is renowned for his ability to make minor-league ball clubs financially viable and for keeping the ballpark atmosphere fun. Some of his promotions include one dollar admission night, Tania Harding autographed baseball night, and zero attendance night, which featured a party in the parking lot and guards at the gates denying admission until attendance was officially recorded in the sixth inning. The Riverdogs ballpark, Joe Riley Stadium, is a wonderful facility that is not to be missed. For more on the Riverdogs, including their schedule, visit www.riverdogs.com.

The Charleston Battery Soccer
The Battery came into existence in 1997 as a new team in the USISL outdoor league. Following a historic win in 1996, The Battery finished second in the Atlantic Division and was accepted into the Division II A-League playing in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the USISL. The Battery captured the crown again in 2003. For more on The Charleston Battery, visit www.charlestonbattery.com.

Oysters
Oysters are among the most popular local seafood. Oyster roasts are a popular late fall and winter past time and are commonly held as church functions or for charity. Individual harvesting of oysters and clams for personal consumption is a great local pastime. Harvesting is done by hand at low tide at designated Public Oyster Grounds. A stamp is required from the South Carolina Marine Recreational Fisheries. Harvesting oysters between May 15 and September 1st is unlawful as that is a critical time in the breeding and maturing cycle for oysters. Maps for the Public Oyster Grounds are available from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (803-734-3888).

Blue Crabs
The Blue Crab is a treat with meat that many describe as sweet. The most common device to catch blue crab is a crab pot. This trap is set with a chicken neck or fish head. To while away an afternoon in peace and catch your crab dinner, sit alongside the a tidal creek with your bait tied to a string. The crab is lured in by the bait caught with a net. Crabbing is legal all year, but it is most productive in late spring and summer.

Shrimp
Individuals can start their recreational harvest of brown shrimp by cast nets and seines in early June. White shrimp are first caught late in July or early August and are generally gone by mid October. The shrimp official baiting fishery is set by law to last 60 days and must start between September 1st and 15th.
