Charleston is the jewel in the
Lowcountry's crown, the cultural capital of the American
Southeast. Consistently named America's most mannerly
city, Charleston retains the grace, charm, gentility,
hospitality, and architectural integrity that made her
famous. With a strong eye to preservation and restoration,
Charleston is continually undergoing a transformation
and rebirth from the Battery outward (fueled by a booming
local economy) while remaining true to her roots in
Antebellum southern appearance. Voted as one of the
top 5 domestic vacation destinations, Charleston turns
the weekends into vacations for the residents of the
area.
The vibrant downtown area
is roughly 8 square miles in size and is where you will
find the business district. The primary business street
is Broad Street with East Bay and King Street also supporting
significant commerce. These streets are lined with banks,
government buildings, and professional offices, sprinkled
with art galleries, clothiers, and cafes. You can tour
the Peninsula on your own with the help of a walking
map, via horse drawn carriage, or with a guided walking
tour. You will see beautiful Colonial, Victorian, and
Antebellum homes, churches, and 18th century storefronts,
all meticulously preserved. Something that sets Charleston
apart from other historic downtowns such as Boston or
Philadelphia is the absence of tall buildings. Charleston
has enacted tough architectural rules such as the ordinance
that designates that no building shall be taller than
St. Michael's Church. Charleston is truly a unique and
beautiful city with Southern character.
Charleston can very loosely be divided into two locational
categories: the historic, tourist, business and educational
areas below the crosstown, or the gentrifying area above
the crosstown. Consumers seeking the lifestyle of a Peninsula Charleston location with all the features of state of the art new construction should shop Longborough.
