  Communities Mount Pleasant

Across Charleston harbor to the northeast from downtown is "The pleasant side of the river", the local's nickname for Mount Pleasant. English settlers founded Mt. Pleasant in 1680. Mount Pleasant is a booming and vibrant community by itself, and its desirability is enhanced by its proximity to historic downtown, industrial North Charleston, and the beaches of Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island. Bordered on the north end by the Francis Marion National Forest, to the east by Charleston's Sea Islands, and to the west and south by the Wando River and Charleston harbor, Mount Pleasant is surrounded by woods and water.

Mount Pleasant is a popular tourist destination by itself with many great restaurants, reasonable hotel rates, and historic attractions such as Boone Hall Plantation, Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum (home of the USS Yorktown), the seafaring village of McClellanville, The Charles Pinckney Historic Site, and the residential area known as Old Village of Mount Pleasant.

Mount Pleasant's population has exploded from approximately 20,000 in 1980 to 62,000 in 2007. With the construction of the Mark Clark expressway to the employment center of North Charleston and the construction of the Isle of Palms connector from Mount Pleasant to the Isle of Palms, Mount Pleasant's desirability has grown with its accessibility. In addition to accessibility, Mount Pleasant boasts the area's most affluent population as well as many of the amenities that follow money: good schools, excellent shopping and dining, and world-class golf.
